Detroit has become the first city in the United States to open a wireless charging roadway, located on 14th Street near Michigan Central in Corktown. Developed by Electreon, the technology uses inductive-charging coils beneath the surface to charge electric vehicles while in motion or stationary. The company hopes to expand the wireless charging roadways for public use in the coming years.

Detroit Leads the Way with First Wireless EV Charging Road in the US

The City of Detroit, in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Electreon, has installed the first wireless charging public roadway in the US. The quarter-mile stretch in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood features inductive-charging copper coils beneath the road's surface, which charge EVs equipped with Electreon receivers as they drive over it. The pilot project aims to test and refine the wireless charging technology, with plans to open it to the public in the coming years. MDOT and Electreon have committed to a five-year partnership to develop and pilot the electric road system on Michigan roads.
