Cornell Researchers Restore 95% Capacity to Spent EV Batteries via Chemical Regeneration

Cornell University researchers have developed a cost-effective method to restore end-of-life lithium-ion batteries to 95% of their original capacity. The technique, known as Direct Electrode-to-Electrode Regeneration (DEER), chemically removes the solid electrolyte interphase layer that accumulates on electrodes, allowing for reuse rather than destructive material extraction. While promising for electric vehicle batteries, the process currently requires disassembly and faces challenges in large-scale industrial application.
