"Oregon Truck Crash Leads to Thousands of Young Salmon Surviving by Dropping into Nearby Creek"
A tanker carrying over 100,000 young salmon to the Imnaha river in Oregon overturned, inadvertently restocking a nearby creek with tens of thousands of surviving fish. While almost 26,000 smolts perished in the accident, the majority made it into Lookingglass creek and are expected to migrate to the Pacific Ocean. The hatchery coordinator described the incident as a "kind of fish taxi," and officials believe the fish will eventually try to return to the creek as their spawning ground. The hatchery was established to supplement the threatened wild salmon population and mitigate losses caused by federal dams on the lower Snake river.
