Missouri Prosecutor Eric Zahnd Dies in Courthouse Amid Active MSHP Investigation
Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd, the longest-serving in the county's history, died inside the courthouse on September 17, 2026. Authorities confirmed he was the subject of an active criminal investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) at the time of his death. While the MSHP declined to specify the allegations, Zahnd’s family claims the probe stems from a minor error involving county email usage in a political dispute, not serious misconduct. The death prompted a closure of the courthouse and widespread tributes from state officials, though details regarding the cause of death remain limited.
