Europe's June heatwave linked to over 10,000 excess deaths, EuroMOMO finds
EuroMOMO data show Europe recorded more than 10,000 excess deaths during the late‑June heatwave across 27 countries, with the week of June 22–28 yielding about 10,650 excess deaths and France/Belgium reporting very high mortality; the spike largely affects those 65 and older and is attributed to extreme heat amplified by human-caused climate change. The excess covers deaths from all causes, not just heat-related ones, and a separate UK study estimates about 2,700 heat-related deaths in England and Wales in May–June; the heatwave disrupted power, schools, and set temperature records across France, Spain, and the UK.
