Everest: The Other Side and Tenzing Contrast Climbing as Personal Obsession vs. Spiritual Communion
Two new films about Mount Everest, 'Everest: The Other Side' and 'Tenzing,' offer contrasting views on mountaineering. The documentary focuses on Jim Morrison’s grief-driven attempt to ski the mountain’s north face after his partner Hilaree Nelson died in an avalanche. The biopic 'Tenzing' highlights the 1953 ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, framing the climb as a spiritual connection with nature rather than a conquest. Critics note the documentary’s controversial handling of Morrison’s trauma and the ethical implications of modern Everest tourism.
