ADHD Gene Profile in Kids Linked to Higher Risk of Parental Separation

A Norwegian study of about 40,000 child–parent trios found that a higher ADHD polygenic index in a child is associated with a modest but reliable increase in the odds of their parents separating or divorcing (about 7% per standard deviation increase). The effect is stronger for families with daughters and for higher-education, higher-socioeconomic-status households, and is also influenced by maternal age; no similar pattern was found for most other traits. The researchers caution that results are context-specific to Norway and ancestry-specific for current polygenic indices, and that these indices capture only a fraction of ADHD’s genetic influence. They highlight evocative gene-environment dynamics in family systems.
