First-time runner Rachel Apa dies of rare muscle breakdown near NYC Marathon finish
Rachel Apa, 24, died Sunday after collapsing near mile 24 of her first New York City Marathon. Diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition causing muscle breakdown, she was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Her father described her as being in perfect health, noting she ran to honor her grandfather who suffered from Parkinson's disease.
