Advancements in Eye-Tracking Devices Revolutionize Early Autism Diagnosis

A tablet-based eye-tracking device called EarliPoint Evaluation has shown promise in identifying autism spectrum disorder in children as young as 16 months old. Two studies published in JAMA and JAMA Network Open found that the device's diagnostic abilities were comparable to those of specialists, potentially speeding up the diagnosis process. Currently, autism is diagnosed by highly trained experts over multiple hours of testing, leading to long waiting lists at specialty centers. Identifying autism early is crucial for better long-term outcomes, as younger children's brains are more adaptable. The device, which monitors eye movements during a video showing social interactions, could be used by pediatricians and primary care physicians for broader screening. Therapy can then be provided to help autistic children develop social skills and behaviors.
