Texas Man Executed Despite Claims of False Expert Testimony
Brent Ray Brewer, a Texas man convicted of killing a man during a robbery in 1990, was executed by lethal injection after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene. Brewer claimed that his death sentence was based on false and discredited expert testimony. His lawyers argued that a prosecution expert falsely claimed Brewer would be a future danger, a finding necessary for imposing the death penalty. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals dismissed an appeal on this issue without reviewing the merits. Brewer expressed remorse and a desire to apologize to the victim's family. He is the seventh inmate executed in Texas and the 21st in the U.S. this year.
