Primary Care Physicians: The Backbone of Chronic Disease Management
Family physicians are the primary providers of care for the majority of patients with chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, according to a population-based study in Alberta, Canada. The study highlights the need for greater involvement of family physicians in creating guidelines for disease management and developing clinical trials. While specialists play a larger role in certain conditions that require specialized interventions, family physicians remain involved in the care of a significant proportion of patients. The study also emphasizes the importance of including primary care perspectives in guideline development and research, as well as providing support for family doctors, particularly those in rural communities.
