Post-referendum optimism: Politicos see 10-15 Liberal gains in Alberta
Alberta’s October 19 referendum resulted in a decisive 75-25 rejection of separation, with 1.5 million voters choosing to remain in Canada. While the 'stay' side won, five immigration questions passed, granting Premier Danielle Smith a mandate to restrict services for temporary residents. Despite the defeat of secession, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s high popularity in the province has led strategists to predict the Liberals could win 10 to 15 additional seats in Alberta in the 2029 election. A new right-of-centre party, Alberta Now, is also emerging, potentially fragmenting the Conservative base in urban centers like Calgary and Edmonton.
