Mangione’s NY murder case stalls over double jeopardy after federal guilty plea
Luigi Mangione’s New York state murder trial over the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was postponed after he pleaded guilty in federal court to two counts of stalking resulting in death, with his defense arguing double jeopardy may bar the state case. Judge Gregory Carro set an Oct. 9 deadline for prosecutors to respond and rescheduled the trial for Dec. 10. The federal plea, made without a deal, carries potential life in prison; federal charges were previously narrowed from murder with a firearm. Prosecutors and defense will continue to clash over whether Mangione can be tried twice for the same conduct.
