Orioles activate Bautista, shut down Helsley for 2026

The Baltimore Orioles have reinstated right-handed reliever Félix Bautista from the 60-day injured list while shutting down Ryan Helsley for the remainder of the 2026 season. This move clears roster space for Bautista, who returns after a 14-month absence due to shoulder surgery, while Helsley’s recovery from elbow inflammation has stalled. The team is prioritizing Bautista’s return to the majors for the final week of the season, despite a recent rough minor league debut, to bolster their late-inning options as they chase a playoff spot.

MLB Hot Stove: Mets, Red Sox, and Rays Make Big Moves

The New York Mets are seriously pursuing Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto but are not planning to spend aggressively on other top free agents. They may pivot to mid-market arms like Lucas Giolito if they fail to land Yamamoto. The Mets are also looking to add an outfielder and a right-handed hitting third baseman. In other news, the Tampa Bay Rays' president of baseball operations, Erik Neander, believes that prospects Joe Pepiot and Peter DeLuca could impact the big league club soon after trading Tyler Glasnow and Manuel Margot to the Dodgers. Additionally, Baltimore Orioles closer Felix Bautista is recovering well from Tommy John surgery and is expected to return for Spring Training 2025 after signing a two-year extension.

Félix Bautista's Season Ends with Tommy John Surgery

Baltimore Orioles' All-Star closer Félix Bautista will undergo Tommy John surgery, ruling him out for the remainder of the 2023 season and likely the 2024 season as well. The 28-year-old right-hander partially tore the UCL in his right elbow in August and had been hoping to return this year, but the Orioles decided to prioritize his long-term recovery. Bautista had an impressive season with a 1.48 ERA, 33 saves, and 110 strikeouts in 56 appearances.

Félix Bautista Leaves Orioles Victory with Arm Discomfort

Baltimore Orioles closer Félix Bautista exited Friday's victory over the Rockies with arm discomfort, raising concerns about a potential arm-related injury. Manager Brandon Hyde confirmed that Bautista will be further evaluated. Losing Bautista for any length of time would be a significant blow to the team, as he has been a key contributor with impressive stats this season. The Orioles will determine whether a replacement is needed or if Bautista's injury allows for a delay in making a roster move. The prospect of going without Bautista in the bullpen for the remainder of the season is worrisome for the Orioles.
