UK's First Baby Born with DNA from Three People Using Experimental IVF Technique
The UK's fertility regulator has confirmed the birth of the country's first babies created using an experimental technique that combines DNA from three people to prevent rare genetic diseases. The technique involves taking genetic material from a woman's egg or embryo and transferring it into a donor egg or embryo that still has healthy mitochondria. The fertilized embryo is then transferred into the womb of the mother. The genetic material from the donated egg comprises less than 1% of the child created from this technique. The UK became the first country to adopt legislation regulating such methods in 2015.
