"Decoding the Truth: Understanding Ultra-Processed Food Labeling"
UK experts suggest that labelling foods as ultra-processed may not provide sufficient information for consumers to gauge the healthiness of a product, as some ultra-processed foods could fall into the "healthy" green category of the current "traffic-light" system. While many ultra-processed foods are unhealthy, some, like meat-alternative products, may appear healthy under the current labelling system. There is a lack of research on the overall health effects of ultra-processed foods, leading to uncertainties about their impact on conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. A trial has been initiated to compare the health outcomes of a diet consisting of ultra-processed foods with one consisting of minimally processed foods, aiming to provide guidance for consumers.
