Infant Legionnaires Case Linked to Home Formula Mixer and Warm Water
Public health investigators linked a Legionnaires disease case in a 10‑month‑old infant with an immunocompromising condition to a home powdered formula mixer. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 was found in the device reservoir and in household water; the device stored warm water (106°F) and had not been drained for over 30 days, creating conditions favorable for bacterial growth. Guidance recommends heating water to ≥158°F (70°C) for reconstituting powdered formula for immunocompromised infants, cooling before feeding, and urges manufacturers to modify device instructions/design to minimize Legionella amplification.
