Tennessee execution chief resigns after Pike survives botched lethal injection
Christa Pike remains unconscious on a ventilator after Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her by lethal injection on September 30. Her lawyers allege the state ignored medical protocols, causing severe burns and blisters. Governor Bill Lee has halted all executions in the state for the remainder of 2026 and ordered an independent review. Frank Strada, the head of the Tennessee Department of Correction, resigned on October 3 following scrutiny of his past record in Arizona. This is the second failed execution attempt in Tennessee this year, reigniting national debates over the death penalty and the state’s handling of capital punishment.
