Eye-Scan Thinning May Forewarn Atrial Fibrillation Years Ahead
A large study of 90,000 eye scans found thinning in the ganglion cell–inner plexiform layer linked to a 27% higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation years later; the effect appeared in both the AlzEye and UK Biobank cohorts and was detectable before AF diagnosis, suggesting routine retinal imaging could serve as an early warning signal to prompt closer heart monitoring—not a replacement for existing tests.
