Google, along with major European carriers, has sent a letter to regulators in Europe arguing that iMessage should be classified as a "core" service and subject to interoperability rules under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). If iMessage is included, it would have to be interoperable with competing messaging services, benefiting European consumers and businesses. Google is already preparing for this possibility by supporting an interoperable end-to-end encrypted communication standard. Apple has argued that iMessage does not meet the user thresholds to be considered a gatekeeper service, but regulators have until February to make a decision.
Apple's attempt to claim it has three separate Safari browsers in order to avoid being labeled a gatekeeper under the EU's Digital Markets Act has been rejected by the European Union. The EU ruled that Apple's Safari browsers should be considered as one single web browser core platform service (CPS). However, Apple's argument that it offers five distinct operating systems, with only iOS meeting the DMA thresholds, was accepted. Additionally, the EU determined that Apple's Messages service qualifies as a gatekeeper, despite Apple's argument that it does not make money from Messages. If Apple fails to comply with the DMA requirements, it could face fines of up to 10% of its worldwide turnover.
While antivirus providers are trying to sell subscriptions for their wares, macOS is still secure enough for users to resist the products. The best antivirus for Mac is a combination of existing protections and user awareness. Apple includes various mechanisms in macOS that make it difficult for malware to be a problem for the typical user, such as Gatekeeper and System Integrity Protection. However, these protections can only go so far, and user awareness is still the best defense against online hazards.
