Principal's swift evacuation saves 900 students as Nepalese school is washed away by floods
In Nepal’s Trishuli Valley, Principal Rajendra Dawadi ordered an evacuation from Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School, saving about 900 students as floodwaters unleashed by a glacial burst washed the building away; two staff members remain missing. The 1,643-student school had around 900 on site that morning, and a bus carrying students had been turned back while a nearby bridge collapsed. The disaster has killed more than 950 people in Nepal and Tibet, with thousands missing, and destroyed or damaged numerous schools, disrupting education for tens of thousands. Dawadi deflects hero status, saying it was his duty and urging rebuilding and student counseling as classes resume.
