Widow details 90-year-old's death after hospital-acquired scabies labeled environmental hazard
Paul, a 90-year-old man from Ceredigion, died in June 2026 after contracting crusted scabies at Glangwili Hospital. His widow, Kate Baxter, reported that he was tagged as an 'environmental hazard' in the morgue due to active mites. The infection, which took 12 weeks to diagnose, weakened his immune system and contributed to his death from pneumonia. Hywel Dda health board has since closed multiple wards to control the outbreak, while critics highlight the stigma and delayed diagnosis.
