Omaha school district bans police shock gloves after communication gaps surface
Omaha Public Schools (OPS) has banned the use of G.L.O.V.E. electric shock gloves by school resource officers (SROs) in its buildings, following a public outcry and revelations of communication breakdowns. While the Omaha Police Department (OPD) agreed to the ban, Bellevue Police refused, maintaining that the devices are safe and effective. Internal emails show OPS school safety officials were aware of the gloves since 2023, contradicting Superintendent Matthew Ray’s claim that he was uninformed. The controversy highlights tensions over police presence in schools and the transparency of law enforcement equipment procurement.
