Memorial Day 2026 will see closures for nonessential federal and local government offices, post offices and major mail services, schools, the stock market, and major banks, while many big retailers including Walmart, Target, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Meijer, Kroger, Walgreens, CVS, Dollar General and Dollar Tree are open (Aldi has limited hours) as Michigan marks the holiday.
Juneteenth, a federal holiday celebrated on June 19, will see closures of banks, government offices, and the stock market. While some small businesses may be closed, major retailers and grocery stores are unlikely to shut down. Private businesses such as Zillow, Nike, and Lyft are giving workers the day off, while Google and Amazon are only encouraging workers to avoid meetings. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free in Galveston, Texas.
