One of the Kentucky Derby 152's co-favorites, The Puma, has been scratched just hours before the race due to swelling in his leg from a skin infection. Trainer Gustavo Delgado Sr. said the swelling should subside in a day or two. Derby officials confirmed the scratch, reducing the field to 19 horses for the 6:57 p.m. ET race. The Puma had climbed to 5-1 odds earlier in the week and is the fifth horse scratched, joining Right to Party, Silent Tactic, Fulleffort and Corona de Oro.

Mage, owned by OGMA investments, Ramiro Restrepo, Sterling Racing and CMNWLTH and trained by Gustavo Delgado, won the 2023 Kentucky Derby with jockey Javier Castellano. Two Phil's came in second and Angel of Empire came in third. Mage won with a time of 2:01:57. The purse for this year's race was $3 million.

Mage, with 16-1 odds, won the 149th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, finishing in 2:01.57 and paying $32.42 to win. Trained by Gustavo Delgado and ridden by Javier Castellano, Mage beat a field of 18 horses, including morning-line favorite Forte, who was scratched prior to the race. Two Phil's and Angel of Empire finished second and third, respectively.
