MacBook Screen Protectors Risk Damaging Anti-Reflective Coatings and Hinges
Engadget reports that applying screen protectors to MacBooks is generally inadvisable due to risks of damaging the display's anti-reflective coating and interfering with the laptop's tight closing tolerance. While protectors offer theoretical benefits like privacy, the adhesive can crack the screen's top layer upon removal, and thick glass protectors may prevent the lid from closing properly, causing structural damage. The outlet suggests that MacBooks, unlike phones, are less prone to drops and are typically used on stable surfaces. If protection is required, magnetic privacy filters are recommended over adhesive options. Additionally, hardshell cases and keyboard covers are flagged as potential hazards if they trap heat or disrupt the precise gap between the screen and keyboard.
