Bangladesh's hard-won measles progress undone by deadly outbreak
Bangladesh, which had reduced measles cases with vaccination rates over 90%, is facing a severe outbreak since March that has killed about 750 people and infected around 120,000, with nearly 1,000 suspected cases daily, as overcrowded hospitals strain the system. A 'perfect storm' of vaccine order delays, Covid-era disruption, paused mass campaigns, and Eid travel contributed; emergency vaccination drives have since inoculated over 18 million children, but deaths continue and the outbreak remains far from over.
