Advancements in Period Product Testing: Using Actual Blood for the First Time

Until recently, manufacturers of period products have been using saline and water to test absorbency, but a recent study by Dr. Bethany Samuelson Bannow and her team at Oregon Health and Science University used actual blood to better understand the effectiveness of these products. The study found that most brands and products overstate their absorbency, with period discs holding the most blood at 61ml and tampons and pads holding around 20-50ml. This research may help improve the diagnosis and treatment of heavy bleeding, which has been stigmatized due to a lack of guidance on what constitutes heavy bleeding.
