Heretic Coffee Ends Gaza Partnership After Community Backlash
Heretic Coffee owner Josh White announced on Thursday that the Portland-based shop is ending its partnership with HUMANITE Peace Collective and withdrawing from a campaign to build a free cafe in Gaza. The decision follows significant community pushback and concerns regarding the partner organization’s history. While the initial goal was to raise $100,000 to construct a space called the 'Department of Peace' in Western Gaza, the project has been halted. HUMANITE will continue the initiative independently using funds already collected, which previously exceeded $24,000. White admitted he failed to communicate project details clearly or consult local patrons before the announcement, stating he is refocusing efforts on local needs in Portland.
