Illinois hospital suspends surgeries after Legionella detected in cooling system
UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island in Rock Island, Illinois, has halted all surgical procedures after Legionella bacteria, the pathogen responsible for Legionnaires' disease, was identified in its air conditioning cooling towers. The Illinois Department of Public Health ordered the suspension of surgeries until the bacteria is no longer detectable in the system. Although the hospital remains open for other services, it is currently without air conditioning while remediation efforts are underway. Officials state that the contamination was limited to an area outside the main building, posing no immediate risk to patients or the community, and drinking water remains safe. The facility is working with water-system experts to clean and retest the HVAC infrastructure, with a clearer assessment expected early next week.
