Scientists at Rice University have received $45 million in funding to develop an implant-based treatment system that aims to cut cancer death rates by 50%. The implant, called HAMMR, will continuously monitor cancer cells and deliver immunotherapy drugs in real time, similar to diabetes treatments with insulin pumps. The goal is to cure cancer in as little as 60 days. The technology will provide real-time data from the tumor environment to guide more effective and tumor-informed therapies. The first clinical trial will investigate the implant's effectiveness for recurrent ovarian cancer, with human trials expected to begin within five years.
