The Finite Universe: Exploring the Possibility - Nautilus

The question of whether the universe is finite or infinite remains unanswered. While the observable universe extends about 47 billion light-years in every direction, it is possible that the universe is larger than what we can see. Theoretical cosmologists have considered the possibility of a finite universe with boundaries or a closed topology, but there is no direct evidence to support these ideas. Leading cosmologists argue that spatial infinitude is the natural consequence of current theories of cosmic inflation. The Copernican Principle suggests that there are infinitely many sibling galaxies similar to ours in the universe. The concept of heat death, where everything in the universe reaches a state of high entropy, is a possibility, but what happens after heat death is speculative and requires extrapolation beyond our current understanding.
