France Erupts in Protests Against Police Violence and Racism
Tens of thousands of people marched in France to protest against police violence, with clashes breaking out in Paris. The demonstrators criticized article 435-1 of the internal security code, which allows law enforcement to shoot in the event of a suspect's refusal to comply. Unions estimated that around 80,000 people participated in the protests nationwide, while the interior ministry put the number at 31,300. The government condemned the violence that occurred during the march, with three officers being slightly injured. The protest comes after the release of a report showing that 38 people died as a result of police action in 2022.
