First Enforcement of NY Horse Slaughter Ban Leads to Arrest in St. Lawrence County
New York State Police arrested a Pennsylvania driver on Sept. 2 in St. Lawrence County for transporting 25 horses destined for slaughter in Canada, marking the first enforcement of the state's 2024 ban on horse slaughter transport. The horses, traced to Rotz Livestock in Shippensburg, Pa., were seized and moved to a veterinary clinic in Saratoga County for adoption. While animal rights groups hailed the arrest as a historic precedent, the New York Attorney General previously declined to investigate the source facility due to resource constraints.
