A new report by IQAir reveals that all but one of the 100 cities with the worst air pollution in 2023 were in Asia, with India hosting 83 of them. The study focused on fine particulate matter, finding that only 9% of cities globally met the World Health Organization's air quality guidelines. Air pollution, largely caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, poses severe health risks, with millions of people dying annually from related issues. The climate crisis plays a pivotal role in exacerbating air pollution levels, impacting weather patterns and leading to more severe wildfires and longer pollen seasons. While some regions saw improvements, such as China, others experienced a rebound in pollution levels, highlighting the urgent need for major changes in energy infrastructure and agricultural practices to address this global issue.
