US Military Strikes Iranian-Backed Facilities in Syria and Iraq in Response to Attacks
The US military conducted airstrikes on two facilities in eastern Syria operated by Iranian-backed forces in response to ongoing attacks against American military personnel in Iraq and Syria. The strikes targeted a weapons depot and an ammo storage area near Abu Kamal. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that the US does not seek conflict but the "Iranian-backed attacks" are unacceptable and must stop. There have been 19 attacks against American personnel since October 17, resulting in one death and 21 injuries. The strikes are not connected to the Israel-Hamas conflict, and Israel was not informed of the plan ahead of time. President Biden directed the action to defend US personnel and interests.
