The Kansas City Chiefs lost their second consecutive preseason game, falling 16-15 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 22, 2026. Kicker Harrison Butker made three long field goals, including a 69-yard attempt, but missed a late go-ahead kick and an extra point. Rookie wide receiver Jalen Royals had a strong performance, while right tackle Kahlil Benson struggled against Tampa Bay's pass rush. Patrick Mahomes did not play.
The Chiefs opened their first full-team practice in St. Joseph with Cyrus Allen drawing early trust from Patrick Mahomes in red-zone and seven-on-seven drills, while Rashee Rice left early and L’Jarius Sneed departed mid-practice. Omarr Norman-Lott is on the PUP list and Mansoor Delane wore a non-contact jersey. Defensively, Sneed lined up outside with a nickel rotation of Roland-Wallace and Canady, and Cooper McDonald started as the third linebacker in a five-man front featuring Jones, Tonga, Karlaftis, Gillotte and Mason Thomas (Gillotte as a SAM). Offensively, Allen’s emergence contrasted with Jalen Royals’ rough day; Mahomes connected with Kelce and Butker hit several long kicks. Punt return duties included Remigio, Smith, Allen and De Jesus, as Kansas City begins ramping toward full pads in training camp.
Kansas City Chiefs' receiver Xavier Worthy is progressing from injury and may return Sunday; other players like Jalen Royals, Mike Danna, and Kristian Fulton are also dealing with injuries but are expected to practice.
