Google Advises Using 503 Status Codes During PHP2Shell Patching to Protect Search Rankings
As the internet rushes to patch the critical PHP2Shell vulnerability, Google’s John Mueller advised webmasters taking sites offline to use HTTP 503 status codes rather than allowing timeouts or 404 errors. This approach helps prevent long-term ranking and indexing issues in Google Search while security patches are implemented. The vulnerability affects all PHP versions from 5.4 through 8.5.11, allowing unauthenticated remote code execution, and has prompted precautionary shutdowns of government, school, and hospital websites in Europe.
