
Commanders Set to Honor John Riggins with No. 44 Retirement in 2026
The Washington Commanders announced they will retire John Riggins’ No. 44 during the 2026 season, with a halftime ceremony planned for Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams. Riggins, a Hall of Fame running back who spent his prime years in Washington after starting with the Jets, owns franchise records of 7,472 rushing yards and 79 rushing touchdowns, including a standout 1983 season (1,347 yards, 24 TDs) and four playoff TDs in the 1982 postseason. No player will wear No. 44 again.
