Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia exits Pentagon Joint Staff after 11-month tenure
Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia has retired from the U.S. Army after being removed from his position as Director for Strategy, Plans & Policy (J-5) at the Pentagon’s Joint Staff. Sources indicate his departure was due to a lack of confidence, marking the latest instance of senior military leadership changes under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Sylvia served in the role for 11 months, succeeding Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, who also retired early last year. The Joint Staff issued a statement thanking Sylvia for his 32 years of service, though it remains unclear whether the removal was ordered by Hegseth or Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine.
