Jon Small, Billy Joel’s longtime video director, dies, leaving a legacy of iconic music videos
Jon Small, Billy Joel’s longtime collaborator and influential music-video director who also worked with Reba McEntire, Run-DMC and many others, has died. Joel announced the news on Instagram and recalled Small’s role in smoothing his path during tough times. The pair were early bandmates in the Hassles and Attila, faced a fallout over an affair with Small’s wife before reconciling, and Small later directed Joel’s videos such as 'Tell Her About It' and the Run-DMC collaboration 'Walk This Way.' Small also directed for many artists, produced numerous videos, and his most recent directing credit was Luke Combs and Eric Church’s 'Does to Me' (2020); he was a co-executive producer on the Billy Joel biopic project 'Billy & Me', which Joel criticized.
