Ambush in Jonglei Kills Two UN Peacekeepers Amid Rising South Sudan Tensions
Two United Nations peacekeepers were killed and seven others injured in an ambush on a patrol in Jonglei state, South Sudan, on August 24, 2026. The attack, carried out by unidentified armed men, marks a rare instance of violence against UN personnel and highlights the escalating risk of a full-scale civil war. The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) condemned the incident as unacceptable and deployed a quick reaction force to secure the area. While the identities of the victims remain undisclosed, the attack occurs against a backdrop of severe humanitarian crises and political instability following the collapse of the 2018 peace agreement between President Salva Kiir and former Vice President Riek Machar.
