Mets' Jeff McNeil Benched for Mental Reset Amid Struggles

Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets is taking a week-long break from the lineup, partly for mental reasons, as he struggles with a significant slump in his performance. Manager Carlos Mendoza has opted to play recent call-up Jose Iglesias, who has been performing well both offensively and defensively. McNeil's batting average has dropped significantly, and his overall play has declined, prompting the team to give him time to "work on some things."

Yuli Gurriel Secures Spot on Marlins' Opening Day Roster

The Miami Marlins will select the contract of first baseman Yuli Gurriel, while veteran infielder Jose Iglesias has chosen to remain in the minors after declining his opt-out clause. Gurriel and Iglesias both signed minor league deals with the Marlins, but the team opted for Gurriel due to a lack of depth at first base. Miami still has to place Max Meyer on the 60-day injured list to create space for Gurriel on the 40-man roster.

"Marlins Roster Battles: Gurriel, Sanchez, and Cooper's Future"

The Miami Marlins are considering only breaking camp with one of Yuli Gurriel or Jose Iglesias, who recently signed minor league contracts. Gurriel is expected to back up Garrett Cooper at first base or join in at least a timeshare, while Iglesias was signed to provide further depth at shortstop. The Marlins may opt to use utilityman Jon Berti at shortstop against left-handed pitching while Wendle faced righties, which might be a cleaner situation than including Iglesias on the roster. The club’s decision on Gurriel or Iglesias is also influenced by the fact that both Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz now seem like good bets to make the Opening Day roster.
