A hall linked to Buddhist saint Kukai on Miyajima island in Hiroshima burned to the ground, along with a nearby hut, after a fire spread to surrounding woodland but was brought under control about two hours after an 8:30 a.m. emergency call; no injuries were reported. The Reikado hall houses the eternal flame that historically seed-fired the Flame of Peace at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, and temple officials said the flame has been moved to a different location. The hall previously burned in 2005 but the flame was preserved.
