Stalled Oil Flow Leaves Kurds Suffering Amidst Iraq-Turkey Disagreement

Iraq and Turkey have failed to reach an agreement on the resumption of oil exports via the port of Ceyhan, leading to a deadlock in negotiations. Turkey has justified the continued closure of the pipeline by citing physical infrastructure issues and the need for inspection after recent earthquakes. However, the real reason for Turkey's reluctance to reopen the line is Iraq's refusal to waive a $1.5 billion fine and drop a second arbitration case. Water sharing, the presence of Turkish troops in the Kurdish region, and Iran's influence over the Iraqi government are also factors affecting the negotiations. The closure of the pipeline has severely impacted the Kurdish Regional Government, which is losing around $700 million per month.
