Atlanta Falcons finalize a three-year, $54 million contract extension with tight end Kyle Pitts Sr., guaranteeing $36 million and replacing his franchise tag; Pitts, the 2021 No. 4 pick, posted a breakout 2025 season (88 catches, 928 yards, 5 TDs) and is now locked in as a core piece of Atlanta’s offense alongside Drake London and Bijan Robinson.
The Atlanta Falcons and tight end Kyle Pitts agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract with $36 million guaranteed, placing Pitts among the top-paid tight ends at roughly $18 million per year after a 88-catch, 928-yard, five-TD 2025 season; with Pitts secured, Atlanta can shift focus to Bijan Robinson’s next contract.
Only three players were tagged in 2026—the Jets' Breece Hall, the Cowboys' George Pickens, and the Falcons' Kyle Pitts—an unusually low number, with the Colts applying a transition tag to Daniel Jones. Teams have until July 15 to negotiate long-term deals; otherwise the tagged players will play under the franchise tag in 2026.
With the 4 p.m. ET franchise-tag deadline today, teams can use non-exclusive, exclusive or transition tags. The Jets placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Breece Hall for about $14.293 million, the Cowboys tagged George Pickens for roughly $27.298 million, and the Falcons tagged Kyle Pitts for about $15.045 million. Cincinnati did not tag Trey Hendrickson, making him a free agent next week.
NFL teams have until 4 p.m. ET today to decide on using the franchise tag, with two tags already handed out (Falcons on Kyle Pitts and Cowboys on George Pickens). More tags could follow—Jets may tag Breece Hall, Cincinnati hasn’t ruled out tagging Trey Hendrickson—while Indianapolis weighs tagging QB Daniel Jones and WR Alec Pierce. If not tagged, players become free agents, and the league year kicks off March 11, placing extra pressure on teams to strike long-term deals or move assets before free agency.
At the NFL Combine, teams outlined plans: Steelers hope Aaron Rodgers returns but are prepared to roll with Mason Rudolph or Malik Willis if not; Texans will not trade C.J. Stroud and will address his fifth-year option and future; Chargers won’t franchise-tag Odafe Oweh despite ample cap space; Ravens are negotiating a contract extension with Lamar Jackson while weighing the future of center Tyler Linderbaum; Falcons intend to move on from Kirk Cousins, avoid commenting on James Pearce Jr., and plan to franchise-tag Kyle Pitts to keep him long-term.
The Falcons are expected to franchise-tag Kyle Pitts, removing the top tight end option from free agency and narrowing the Patriots’ pursuit at the position. With Austin Hooper set to hit unrestricted free agency, New England currently has Hunter Henry, C.J. Dippre, and Marshall Lang under contract for 2026, leaving room to target other available tight ends such as Cade Otton, Isaiah Likely, Charlie Kolar, or Chigoziem Okonkwo, while Fant, Njoku, and Goedert are not on the market.
The Atlanta Falcons will franchise-tag tight end Kyle Pitts for about $16.5 million, counting against the 2026 salary cap, keeping him in Atlanta as talks for a long-term deal continue. Pitts, 25, rose to 1,000+ receiving yards as a rookie but then dealt with injuries, delivering a 928-yard, five-TD season in 2025 before the tag.
The Atlanta Falcons are reportedly planning to apply the 2026 franchise tag to tight end Kyle Pitts Sr., with the tag expected to be around $16 million for one season. Pitts, a 2021 top-5 pick, posted a strong 2025 season (88 catches, 928 yards, 5 TDs) and now the team has until July 15 to work out a multi-year deal, keeping him in Atlanta after Matt Ryan moved into an executive role.
The Atlanta Falcons plan to use the franchise tag on tight end Kyle Pitts to prevent him from hitting free agency, with a 2026 tag value around $16.3 million and the possibility of a long-term deal later. Pitts, who has evolved into a productive receiver (88 catches, 928 yards, 5 TDs in 2025), is seen as a core piece for a Falcons offense under the new regime, which aims to keep him in Atlanta while negotiating a multi-year contract by the July 15 deadline.
