The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) have agreed to settle a federal lawsuit alleging that the sheriff's office violated Second Amendment rights by excessively delaying concealed carry permit applications. Under the terms of the settlement, LASD must adhere to California statutory deadlines for processing permits and publicly report processing times for four years. The DOJ previously alleged that LASD systematically denied thousands of applicants their rights through 'unconscionable delay,' with average wait times exceeding nine months. In response to the lawsuit, LASD established a dedicated unit, added personnel, and implemented new software to eliminate its backlog. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon called the resolution a 'huge win' for residents, while LASD stated it welcomes the settlement and has successfully cleared its application backlog. The agreement requires judicial approval before taking effect.
