Heat Keeps Downtown Chicago Bridge Open for Hours, Causing Citywide Traffic Snarl
The DuSable Lake Shore Drive bridge in downtown Chicago was opened for a scheduled lift to permit river access for the Spirit of Chicago, but a heat-related issue left the span stuck open for about four hours (roughly 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m.), forcing the closure of motor, bike and pedestrian traffic, prompting police reroutes and firefighters to spray water to cool the 200-foot steel span and triggering gridlock on Lake Shore Drive and surrounding streets.
