Updated Lung Cancer Screening Guidelines Expand Eligibility and Recommendations
The American Cancer Society has revised its recommendations for lung cancer screening, stating that people between the ages of 50 and 80 who smoke or used to smoke should consider undergoing a screening. The previous guidance recommended screening for those aged 55 to 74. The organization also advises that people who quit smoking more than 15 years ago may still need to be screened, depending on their smoking history. The LDCT scan is used for lung cancer screenings, allowing medical professionals to identify potential cancerous areas in the lungs before symptoms appear. However, it is not currently recommended for non-smokers to get screened for lung cancer.
