LASSS compound shows promise for preserving muscle during aging in mice
Scientists report a mouse study finding two compounds can protect hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) from nitration during muscle disuse, helping satellite cells activate and potentially slowing age-related muscle loss. In experiments, the compound LASSS (lipoic acid trisulfide) reduced HGF nitration and boosted receptor binding; when given in drinking water to disused mice, LASSS lowered nitration around muscle cells, suggesting a mechanism to preserve muscle. While promising, the researchers caution that aging effects require longer studies and safety in older animals, and it remains to be seen whether these findings translate to humans.
